Megan and I are from a time here in the US where sharing music meant creating a mix tape. On a physical magnetic tape cassette, usually from a cassette deck, though sometimes from a hand held recorder’s built-in condenser mic. After that considerations include the contents and whether or not to include liner notes.

Often these became prized possessions–one these for me came from a bass teacher during my time as a student at Berklee. It was a collection of soul and R&B, mostly deep cuts, all classic in historical terms. It was homework of course–learn all the bass lines–but the music was so new and fresh to my young ears that I quickly treasured it. Another prized mix tape came from Megan–it was a love letter to me from her. It contained an intriguingly wide range of styles from country and jazz to rock and folk.

Sadly all of my tapes are long gone as are the machines I once owned to play them. Now there are so many different ways to consume music, and while I understand the utility of streaming services, I’m old school and prefer the idea of owning my music collection rather than having to lease it. I’ve already purchased vinyl records, then re-purchased to convert to CDs, in some cases I’ve repurchased a third time via streaming services–it’s crazy.

But enough about that…

As a bassist I’ve been fortunate to play a wide range of styles and aesthetics. This collection of tunes draws from the kinds of music that inspire me as a musician. The sounds contained are “comfort food” for my ears. I hope you enjoy them!
